Commission and Committees

Planning Commission

Utah code requires each municipality in the state to have a planning commission. Virgin's five-member Planning and Zoning Commission is responsible for hearing and recording public input on land use issues, reviewing proposed development applications, preparing and updating the General Plan, and making recommendations to the Town Council on land use and regulations. The year’s schedule of meetings is approved at the beginning of each year. Unless a holiday falls inconveniently, regular Planning and Zoning meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, in the Old Church at Heritage Town Square, beginning with a work meeting at 6:30, followed by the official call to order at 7:00 pm.. Occasional special meetings may be scheduled with a minimum 24-hour notice. Meetings are open to the public and will soon be streamed live on the town website.

Historic Preservation Commission

The Virgin Historic Preservation Commission has been inactive for the last five years, although it is still considered an ongoing commission by the State of Utah.  This Board may soon be reconstituted.

The goal of the Virgin Historic Preservation Commission is to survey and inventory community historic places, to review proposed nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, to provide advice and information to Town officials and other governmental officials, and to support enforcement of State Historic Preservation Laws.

Committees

Officials sometimes form committees to analyze issues and make recommendations to the Town Council and/or the Planning and Zoning Commission, to help organize events, and keep Town operations running smoothly. Depending on the need and workload, these committees can meet on a regular schedule or on an as-needed basis.  These committees usually consist of members of the public.

Among others, in the past Virgin has had a Trails Committee, a Parks Committee, and a Streets & Roads Committee, as well as committees to investigate specific issues or projects.  If you are interested in serving on a committee, or have an idea for a needed committee, please let us know. We are always looking for people to help solve problems. All committee and commission meetings are open to the public.
